An alumni of Military School Bangalore and National Defence Academy, Col IS Thapa was commission into 4 Maratha Light Infantry Regiment. He served in Siachen Glacier during 1993-94, got interested in adventure and did his Winter Warfare course from Gulmarg in 1994 and Advance Search and Rescue course from Chamonix, France in 2012. He, as Leader, led the Indian Army (Maratha) expedition to Mt Everest successfully from North Face in 2009. He was Principal, Nehru Institute of Mountaineering, Uttarkashi for 4 year (2009 to 2013) and Chief Instructor/ Commandant Siachen Battle School, Siachen for 2 years (2013 to 2015). He has more than 20 years of adventure/ mountaineering experience and has been to approx 19 challenging mountaineering expeditions including two above 8000 mtrs (Mt Everest and Mt Kanchenjunga). He was the Leader of the first successful Creek area expedition “Expedition Flamingo” to Sir Creek and has also led a formation team successfully in the Army Adventure Challenge Cup competition.

Col IS Thapa has taken over as the Principal, Jawahar Institute of Mountaineering and Winter Sports, Nunwan, Pahalgam from 30 Jun 2017. This Institute under him is looking forward to excel more heights in further improvement in its Infra structure, administration, training, adventure and in mountaineering field to live its motto of "We Train to Excel".
